Mykonos: Greek island hopping (5)

Out of all the islands of Greece, Mykonos is probably the best known for its summer party scene. Every year thousands of tourists and celebrities from all over the world travel to Mykonos to enjoy the vibrant nightlife. But the question is, does Mykonos offer more than just clubs and bars?

We stayed on the south side of the island in the beautiful hotel Soho Roc House that is located between the famous beach clubs Paradise Beach and Scorpios. Besides having an ideal location, the hotel has been impeccably designed with a bohemian aesthetic and has beautiful outdoor lounge areas where you can relax over looking the Aegan Sea.

You might be coming for the parties but we recommend dedicating at least one day strolling around the main town, Chora. The city is made up of traditional white houses with blue doors and narrow streets that are easy to get lost in. Chora is also home to the famous line-up of windmills next to the water and to ‘Mikri Venetia’, a row of waterfront fishing houses built in the mid-18th century with their balconies hanging over the sea with waves crashing on the rocks down below.

In Chora you can find a lot of souvenir stores and places to eat but pay attention to where you go. The city is full with tourists and because of that most places are overpriced and the quality might not always be what you are hoping for. If you are looking for a simple and quick Greek dish then our recommendation is to grab something at ‘Souvlaki Story’. Looking for more traditional Greek food? Nikolas Tavern in the north east of the island is always busy and is serving high quality traditional Greek dishes. This is quite a popular spot so we suggest to show up early because you might have to wait for a bit before you can be seated. Don’t forget to treat yourself with some home made ice cream from ‘I Scream.’ They received a certificate of excellence for four years in a row by Tripadvisor for serving up the best ice cream on the island.

Mykonos has some of the most beautiful sunsets and one the best places to watch it from is the beach club Scorpios. It has the same beautiful aesthetic as the Soho Roc House hotel and is a perfect spot to relax, swim, have a drink or spend the evening dancing under the stars.

Mykonos is part 5 of our Greece island hopping round trip! Please take a look at the other locations in our destinations overview.
