Mykonos: Greek Island Hopping (Part 5)
Out of all the islands of Greece, Mykonos is probably the best known for its summer party scene. Every year thousands of tourists and celebrities from all over the world travel to Mykonos to enjoy the vibrant nightlife.
We stayed on the south side of the island in the beautiful hotel San Giorgio (SOHO ROC House) that is located between the famous beach clubs Paradise Beach and Scorpios. Besides having an ideal location, the hotel has been impeccably designed with a bohemian aesthetic and has beautiful outdoor lounge areas where you can relax over looking the Aegan Sea.
We recommend dedicating one day to visiting the main town, Chora. The city is made up of traditional white houses with blue doors and narrow streets that are easy to get lost in. Chora is also home to the famous line-up of windmills next to the water and to ‘Mikri Venetia’, a row of waterfront fishing houses built in the mid-18th century with their balconies hanging over the sea with waves crashing on the rocks down below.
In Chora you can find a lot of souvenir stores and places to eat but pay attention to where you go. The city is full with tourists and because of that most places are overpriced and the quality might not always be what you are hoping for. If you are looking for just a simple Greek dish then our recommendation is to grab something at ‘Souvlaki Story’. Afterwards, treat yourself with some home made ice cream from ‘I Scream.’ They received a certificate of excellence for four years in a row by Tripadvisor for serving up the best ice cream on the island.
If you are willing to spend a little bit more money on food, than we highly recommend a night of fine dining with a beautiful sunset view at Narcissus. This ‘Greek Cuisine with a modern twist’ restaurant is part of the Kouros Hotel that invited us to try out their new seven course menu. All the dishes are presented really well and the quality is outstanding. You can either choose for a fish, meat or vegetarian option.
Looking for more traditional Greek food? Nikolas Tavern in the north east of the island is always busy and is serving high quality traditional Greek dishes. This is quite a popular spot so we suggest to show up early because you might have to wait for a bit before you can be seated.
Mykonos has some of the most beautiful sunsets and one the best places to watch it from is the beach club Scorpios. It has the same beautiful aesthetic as the San Giorgio hotel and is a perfect spot to relax, swim, have a drink or spend the evening dancing under the stars.
Many people come to Mykonos for the world renowned party scene but we fell in love spending time recuperating and relaxing.
Travel Tip: If you stay at San Giorgio you automatically receive a spot on the guest list at Scorpios. This is a huge plus during peak hours when the entrance line can be quite extensive. This beach club is one of the best places to watch the sunset in all of Mykonos.
